Description

Physical Therapy Specialists PC, was founded in December, 1977, in a small office in Clawson, Michigan. In those early days, PTS was one of only three independent physical therapy clinics in Southeastern Michigan. Dr. Paul Roubal was both the sole therapist and the enterprise visionary. His vision was simple and it was personal: that nothing less than the best patient care would characterize his practice. The office's strong emphasis on quality translated to excellent outcomes for patients. The practice grew steadily - by 1985, there was a clear need to relocate. The patient load was growing and more space was needed to better accommodate the needs of this growing patient base. We wanted to have space for new types of exercise equipment and to provide a monitored step-down/fitness program. A nearby site was chosen and specific building plans meeting the needs of both the practice and the patients were drawn up. In April of 1986, the practice moved to its present site in Troy, Michigan. In Troy, the vision of providing the highest quality care continued….and so did PTS’ growth. In April of 1992, we expanded the facility to 10,000 sq. feet and introduced a formal fitness center fitted with state-of-the-art exercise equipment. In the face of much growth and many changes over the years, one thing has been a proud constant: our commitment to the highest quality patient care. At PTS we demonstrate that commitment via: Extensive use of rehabilitation research to enhance patient results Staffing by specialists who fortify their background with advanced training and education Use of newly-developed procedures for testing, evaluation, and treatment Creation of a patient-sharing environment, in which you have access to numerous therapists and staff members to meet all your rehabilitation needs A firm commitment to hard work - our standards go well beyond what the State of Michigan requires Regular measurement of patient satisfaction as a method for ensuring our results And we make sure you understand our work every step of the way. Why? We believe that, as the patient, you play the most important role in your rehabilitation. In maximizing treatment plan results, we know that the best patient is an informed patient. At PTS these factors are key to success: Experience Members of our professional staff have over 125 years of combined experience and - importantly - they are supported by a seasoned administrative staff. Average Treatment Time Our 1.5 hour treatment average easily eclipses the 30-45 minute standard found elsewhere. Why? Quality care requires time. Professional Depth We place a strong emphasis on continuing education in our field and have published extensively in peer-reviewed medical journals. Office Scope We maintain a one facility office. At over 10,000 square feet, it is one of Michigan’s largest private practices. Importantly, however, we tailor our space and equipment to meet your needs. Schedule We are open six days per week. Our hours of operation - for office and fitness center, alike - are set up for the ease and convenience of our patients. We are firm believers in our community and in our profession. As part of that core belief, we train undergraduate and graduate physical therapists alike from campuses at Oakland University, Wayne State University, University of Michigan-Flint, and Nova Southeastern University, and PTA students from Baker, Macomb Community College, and South University. PTS is a benchmark facility in a dynamic physical therapy profession. We have particular expertise in orthopaedics, sports therapy, pain control, frozen shoulder manipulation, TMD, massage therapy, urinary incontinence and rehabilitation. We’ve been operating in Oakland County since 1977 with a mission of serving our patients through uncompromising rehabilitation care of the highest quality. While our patients come from all over metro Detroit, we are pleased that so many result from patient word-of-mouth. We are likewise proud that we treat so many doctors, friends of doctors and family members of doctors, too. Dr. Roubal insists that “once you’re a patient here, you’ll always have our attention.” While specific treatments will likely result in the kind of rehabilitation success which permits you to leave, there’s never a time when a question about your health won’t be welcome at Physical Therapy Specialists. We are available and eager to partner with you for better health... well beyond today’s aches or pains.

  • Physical Therapy

Physical therapy used to do little more than rehabilitate surgical patients and accident victims. But as health care has changed, the role of physical therapy has greatly expanded. For example, today's health care places a greater emphasis on preventing illness rather than just treating it, on improving quality of life rather than just maintaining it. Physical therapists can help you achieve these goals through programs like preventative exercise regimens, postural improvement therapy, pre-surgical conditioning and overall physical conditioning. In fact, today's physical therapist treats a variety of patients in ways you might not have considered. Physical therapy patients include chronic pain (to regain function despite pain), dental patients (to help correct craniovertebral disorders), adolescents (for scoliosis screening), cancer patients (to treat orthopaedic problems), and many others. Physical Therapy Specialists, PC is a group of professionals dedicated to providing the most effective physical therapy programs available in the medical field. To do this, we must establish a healthy working relationship with both the patients and the referring physician. Our facility is designed to effectively address your needs and those of your physician's office. Our licensed physical therapists have advanced training in Orthopaedics, Strength and Conditioning, Neurology, Mobilization, Sports Therapy, TMJ Dysfunction, and or Fitness Evaluation Programs. All are qualified to develop physical therapy programs and coordinate these with your referring physician. Our therapists maintain active membership in the American Physical Therapy Association both at national and state levels, and we belong to various specialty sections such as the Orthopaedic, Sports Physical Therapy, Pediatric, Private Practice, and Women's Health sections. All therapists are board certified in orthopaedics when able to sit for the board exam. Our practice has a "team approach" philosophy. You will generally be assigned to a specific physical therapist who will coordinate and manage your program. Your "team" may include supportive staff such as Physical Therapist Assistants and Physical Therapy Techs. Also, because our therapists have come from a "patient-sharing" environment, they are quite able to work together during your therapy here should your scheduling or therapy needs indicate. Our physical therapists regularly coordinate your program both verbally and in writing, by daily progress notes and periodic re-evaluations.

  • Hand Therapy

Letter to Patients Early in my clinical practice, I became intrigued about the complexity of the hand and wrist and the profound effect that hand, wrist, and elbow pain and injury has on one’s life. I immersed myself in advancing my knowledge and skills in caring for patients with burns, infections, arthritis, fractures, soft tissue injuries, and post- operative therapy for patients who had undergone tendon transfers, tendon repair, microsurgery, joint replacements. I became a charter member of the American Society of Hand Therapists and was one of the first occupational and physical therapists in the US to pass the board certification examination to become a certified hand therapist (CHT). I’ve gained much of my experience working in close collaboration with surgeons who value the importance of having a therapist with advanced knowledge and the gentle touch that doesn’t damage the delicate tissues of the hand. It is important that my patients are actively involved in their own care. That means that a thorough evaluation is performed on every patient. I listen to my patient’s concerns and address those concerns in the specific treatment goals that we collaboratively develop. To achieve those goals it is important that I educate my patients about their specific diagnosis, the expectations of healing, and recovery. My passion continues to be about providing top level and specialized treatment to all of my patients by helping them overcome pain and achieve the highest level of function of which they are capable at work, home, and with leisure activities. Sincerely, Shelly Reichel, OTRL, CHT

  • Cardiac Conditioning

The Cardiac Rehabilitation program at Physical Therapy Specialists began with a need. We saw that patients who needed cardiac rehabilitation were often severely hampered by existing orthopedic issues like knee arthritis, degenerative hips, and other problems. (According to national statistics, drop-out rates for cardiac rehabilitation programs average anywhere from 30-65%.) With such challenges as our background, PTS developed a very specific protocol addressing both cardiac conditioning and concurrent patient orthopedic problems. The protocol utilizes upper body ergometers, nu-steps, and other types of aerobic exercise equipment that even an orthopedic patient can tolerate in cardiac conditioning. By including treatment for orthopedic problems that might hinder aerobic exercise, we can keep patients going on conditioning programs even after discharge from formal physical therapy. Because our fitness center is also open to the public, a patient who has been discharged has the option to sign on as a fitness member and remain under our care. Team members at PTS are well versed in appropriate precautionary measures pertaining to cardiac conditioning. Moreover, our team includes three exercise physiologists with many years’ experience. Our cardiac rehabilitation program accordingly combines the expertise of the physical therapists with that of the exercise physiologists when determining plans for patient treatment.

  • Custom Foot Orthotics

Custom foot orthotics: devices which attempt to correct biomechanical foot and ankle problems. They may also aid in the correction of other lower extremity biomechanical issues related to knees, hips, back, etc. Combining working principles from anatomy with engineering, orthotic devices are used to control or guide an extremity such as a leg or ankle in order to: Assist movement Restrict movement in a given direction Reduce weight-bearing forces for a particular purpose There’s a big difference between a shoe insert and a custom orthotic device. Your body is a sensitive and dynamic system requiring something other than an 'off the shelf' configuration. Properly fitted orthotics makes movement easier and/or may reduce pain of foot, ankle, or lower extremities. Physical Therapy Specialists, PC has over 30 years of experience making custom foot orthotics. A combination of education and years of experience translates into more functional custom foot orthotic. Using the Fastech system, we match the contours of your feet precisely. PTS orthotics are designed for the way you move.

  • Professional Fitness Inc

Professional Fitness, Inc. was established out of a demand from ex-patients looking for a safe, non-threatening, supervised environment to continue their exercise programs in. In 1992, we opened our doors to the public. At Professional Fitness, Inc. we have a wide range of clients. Our membership is made up of community members whose doctors have recommended regular exercise, those with chronic medical issues that need monitoring and simply feel more comfortable working out under supervision with access to medical professionals on site, student and professional athletes, people with active lifestyles looking for specifically targeted workouts, and the elderly. They have one thing in common; all are proactive about their health! Our fitness center features the most up-to-date exercise equipment available. This includes Nu-Step stair climbers, elliptical trainers, stationary bicycles, plyometrics, treadmills and a Versa-Climber. We also feature a full line of Cybex Strength Systems progressive resistance weight training equipment. Isokinetic exercise provides a "positive" resistance in both directions, which is often safer than using "negative" resistance for specific joint problems. It can also develop fast speeds of movement for use in sports activities and, in combination, has been shown to provide cardiovascular exercise as well as strengthening. Special exercises with high speed pulley systems are also available. In addition to a generously and thoughtfully equipped workout facility complete with a whirlpool and men’s and women’s locker rooms, we also offer convenient hours, a well-educated and certified, dedicated team, therapeutic massage and colon hydrotherapy.

  • Neuro- Musculoskeletal Evaluation

Annual physicals make all the sense in the world. Experts tell us – and your personal experience probably bears this out – that the average hands-on time spent with a patient by an MD during an annual physical is less than ten minutes. For many, an annual physical is simply not enough. Dr. Paul J. Roubal, PhD, DPT, OCS, offer a supplementary medical analysis which takes a more detailed….and very helpful…look at your body. Called a full neuromusculoskeletal examination, it goes well beyond the basics. In fact, it’s an assessment of the entire neuromuscolorskeletal system. This full work-up focuses on the head and neck, spine, peripheral joints, and the overall neuromusculoskeletal system. The evaluation concludes with recommendations about how to address any issues which present….tailored to each patient individually. For added usefulness, our findings along these dimensions lend themselves to being shared with patients' requested physicians to augment annual physical findings. This assessment service is seen as a particular value for those who seek more face time with medical professionals as well as those who want to include in-depth neuromusculoskeletal analysis with their annual health work-up.

  • Colon Hydrotherapy

Colon hydrotherapy is a safe and effective method of removing waste from the large intestine, without the use of medication. By introducing filtered and temperature regulated water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis - series of muscle contractions that occur in your digestive tract. Developed in 1991 out of a need for quality pre and post rehabilitation, our colon hydrotherapy treatment can be used to relieve constipation and to aid in pre/post medical procedure regimens as directed by a client’s medical doctor (e.g., Pre-colonoscopy and post-barium enema). The colon hydrotherapy service Professional Fitness, Inc. provides employs a state-of-the-art Dotolo Research Toxygen Model BSC-UV unit. It is a ‘closed system’ treatment; there is no open evacuation or offensive odor. A Board Certified colon hydro therapist is with a guest at all times for effectiveness, comfort and safety.
