  • Dr. Anthony Youn

    Owner | Board Certified Plastic Surgeon | Award-Winning Author | Anti-Aging Expert

My name is Dr. Anthony Youn, and I’m a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Award-Winning Author, and Anti-Aging Expert. As a successful plastic surgeon for twenty years who has performed tens of thousands of successful cosmetic procedures, I’ve come to realize that the key to true beauty lies in a holistic approach to youth. Surgery should be a last resort. This all started for me growing up a skinny, shy kid – the only Asian kid in a small town in the middle of Michigan. Growing up I always felt different from others and unattractive. I was skinny, wore huge, thick glasses, had braces, and worst of all a jaw that grew to enormous proportions. I remember having crushes on so many girls, and each one either laughed me off or told me that she wasn’t looking for a boyfriend right now. And invariably a week or two later she would be dating someone else. Someone better looking than me. So from an early age I’ve understood how your appearance, and how you feel about your appearance, can profoundly affect your self-esteem and how you feel about yourself. I know what it feels like to look at other people and wish you looked as good as them. I felt invisible. So after high school I ended up having surgery to set back my jaw. This surgery made me realize that you CAN control how you look and feel about yourself. Because of this surgery, I felt that I wasn’t destined to live in the shadows and be invisible to others. And this is one big reason why I became a plastic surgeon. I wanted to help others feel better about themselves and how they look just like I did. Flash forward many years and I’m a plastic surgeon in Metro Detroit. I’m one of the busiest plastic surgeons in the state of Michigan with patients flying in from all over the country to have facelifts, tummy tucks, breast lifts, and eyelid lifts done by me. I had reached the pinnacle of success as a plastic surgeon. Then one patient rocked my world. I met Sherry, a sixty year old woman who told me that as she has gotten older, she’s felt more and more invisible. Sure, when she was in her 20s, she got a lot of attention. She would notice men catching glimpses of her at the store and the bar, and women would look at her and tell her she looked amazing. But once she entered her 30s, 40s, and 50s, this happened less and less, to the point where now, at 60 years old, she felt overlooked. Men didn’t look at her anymore. Women didn’t pay her the same compliments. She felt overlooked, unseen, and basically, invisible. So she told me, “Dr. Youn, the face I see in the mirror isn’t me. I take great care of myself, I work out regularly, I eat right. I take so much better care of myself now than I did in my 20s, yet why do I feel so much worse about myself? So when I look in the mirror I see drooping skin and jowls, and no matter what I do, I can’t change that.” So she asked me to perform a facelift for her. Sherry was convinced that having a facelift was just what she needed to freshen her look and help her feel young again. Sherry was physically a good candidate for this surgery. Safety has always been my top priority, so I ran the routine labs and had her cleared medically for the surgery. A few weeks later I performed a facelift on her at the local hospital. The surgery took three hours and went super-smoothly. Very little bleeding, her neck and jowls were tight and smooth. I kept Sherry in the hospital overnight (which is my typical routine) and saw her the next morning. She looked fantastic. I sent her home with plans to see her in five days. Three days later Sherry decided that because she was feeling so incredible she would go out for a run. This was definitely against my recommendations. An hour after the run her neck and face started filling up with blood. She was rushed to the hospital, where I met her in the emergency room. She was terrified. I rushed her to OR, stopped her bleeding, and saved her. In the end, Sherry did just fine. She looks amazing and no longer feels “invisible.” She also has no signs to show the traumatic complication that she had. However, her situation forced me to really consider my profession, my calling, my beliefs. We did everything by the book and her surgery went perfectly, yet still Sherry had a potentially disastrous complication. What happened to Sherry is one of the greatest fears that all my patients have. That you might have. My patients want to look younger and feel better about how they look, but they are afraid of what might happen with surgery. They are afraid of having a major complication. They are afraid that undergoing surgery will make them look weird and plastic, even worse than where they started. So that’s why I’m a very different plastic surgeon now than I was prior to meeting Sherry.
